Legacy Stone placed for veterans

On Saturday, May 16, 27 veterans and families from New London traveled by bus to Neilsville to attend a special ceremony at The High Ground Veterans Memorial. The purpose was the placement of a Legacy Stone for the New London V.F.W.

The ceremony began at 1 p.m. and there were 24 stones being laid this warm spring day. Each group represented was announced, some groups were large, and some were small. Their stone etching was announced and their stone was put into place. After all 24 stones were laid, there was a talking circle where those in the circle were handed the microphone to briefly share their thoughts with the others. A

The High Ground covers 155 acres with 4 miles of hiking trails. Much of the land is forested with benches along the trails. There are monuments, a learning center, and many artifacts. This is a place of healing and education.

“Every veteran, every loved one of a veteran, and every American who respects what our veterans have done to keep America free should visit ‘The High Ground’ at least once in their lifetime,” said one area veteran who visited the grounds last Saturday. “Freedom isn’t free. All hail our nations heroes.”
