T-Birds’ Welch gets chance at state title

Several Iola-Scandinavia track team members to compete at state

By Greg Seubert

Kristian Welch came from nowhere last year to win the boys’ Division 3 long jump event at the WIAA State Track & Field Meet.

The Iola-Scandinavia junior is heading back to this year’s meet, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 5-6, at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to defend his title.

Welch won last year’s championship in his first season of high school track and has to be considered a favorite in the event this year. He heads into competition with the top qualifying distance of 22 feet, 10 1/2 inches, eight inches longer than his winning effort last year. His next closest competitor this year is Fall Creek’s Sawyer Rubeck at 21 feet, 10 inches.

Welch, who also qualified for state in the 100-meter dash and as a member of the 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams, is one of several Thunderbirds that qualified for state after placing in the top four May 29 at the Rosholt Sectional.

Also heading to state for the T-Birds are Leighten Fischer in the girls’ long jump; Erika Kisting in the girls’ 1,600-meter run; Dylan Robbins in the boys’ 400-meter dash; Tanner Krusa in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles; the boys’ 400 relay team of Welch, Krusa, Robbins and Gio Fredheim; the boys’ 1,600 relay team of Welch, Krusa, Robbins and Kollin Staszak; and the girls’ 3,200-meter relay team of Fischer, Kisting, Shelby Trzebiatowski and Brynn Rasmussen.

Wild Rose will also have several athletes at state after the girls and boys placed second and fifth, respectively, in Rosholt.

They include Tanner Hudziak in the boys’ long jump and 200- and 400-meter dashes; Maya Dix in the girls’ long and triple jumps; Breanne Marchan in the high jump; Noelle Rasmussen in the girls’ 100-meter dash; Olivia Bennot in the girls’ 400; the girls’ 400 and 800 relay teams of Marchan, Rasmusen, Johanna Shepard and Ashley Caswell; and the boys’ 1,600 relay team of Hudziak, Marcus Kasuboski, Paul Hernandez and Tommy Friday.

Other local qualifiers out of Rosholt are Marion senior Cassidy Detert in the girls’ shot put and discus; and Almond-Bancroft senior Reegan Anderson in the boys’ high jump.
