Waupaca and Iola-Scandinavia’s baseball teams tuned up for the WIAA state tournament with a nonconference matchup May 28.

Waupaca came up with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and handed the Thunderbirds a 4-3 loss.

I-S scored in the top of the second inning, but the Comets took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third.

Nate Meihak gave the Comets a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but the T-Birds answered on Seth Korb’s sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Waupaca loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on Walker Smith’s single, an intentional walk to Johnny Popham and a walk to Jason Ellie. Owen McCann then drove Smith in with the game-winning run.

Both teams opened the state tournament with home games.

Waupaca, a No. 1 seed in the Division 2 Mayville Sectional, hosted No. 4 North Fond du Lac or No. 5 Winneconne June 3, while I-S, a No. 3 seed in the Division 3 Marathon Sectional, hosted No. 6 Manawa June 2.
