Indians win D3 regional title

Wega-Fremont softball team defeats Shiocton, Lourdes Academy

It’s been six years since the Weyauwega-Fremont softball team could call itself a regional champion.

That was also the last year the Indians made it to state.

Whether W-F makes it to state again remains to be seen, but the Indians have shut out their first two WIAA state tournament opponents.

The Indians won a Division 3 regional May 29 with a 2-0 win over Shiocton and opened tournament play by shutting out Lourdes Academy 6-0 May 28.

W-F played Laconia, last year’s state runner-up in Division 3, June 2 in a sectional semifinal in Amherst. The winner will face Oconto or Marathon at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 4, in Marathon City in a sectional final.

W-F 2, Shiocton 0
Karissa Akey’s two-run home run in the fifth inning lifted the Indians over the Chiefs for the third time this season.
Meanwhile, Akey’s sister, Kiley, held the Chiefs to two hits.

W-F 6, Lourdes 0
Karissa Akey had a double and a triple, drove in two runs and scored three times as W-F scored twice in the first, third and fifth innings.

Kiley Akey held the Knights to three hits to get the win on the mound and Miranda Potratz had two of the Indians’ six hits and also scored twice.
