Lightning strikes Polar Bears

Hortonville softball team loses regional final

By Scott Bellile

The Hortonville softball team finished its season with a 20-4 record after falling to the Appleton North Lightning at the home regional final on Friday, May 29.

The Polar Bears’ efforts were trumped by the Lightning’s stronger scoring that ended the game 9-5 at Gil Hart Memorial Field.
Appleton North’s Marissa Mullen got things started in the third inning as she slammed a home run that pulled in two other runners. Hortonville retaliated with two runs of its own, but one inning later the Lightning scored another five to boost its lead 8-3.

Each team scored another run during the fifth inning to bring the score to 9-3. Although Appleton North’s runs concluded there, the two additional runs Hortonville nabbed at the bottom of the seventh inning were not enough for the Polar Bears to catch up.

Hortonville’s Lexy Campshure led RBIs with two, one in the third inning and one in the fifth. Ally Fox and had an RBI during the third inning and Randi Morack and Olivia Baehman each had one during the seventh.
