Iola-Scandinavia’s Zach Mortenson capped his junior season of golf this week with a trip to the WIAA state meet.

Mortenson is the only area golfer to advance to state, held June 8-9 at Verona’s University Ridge Golf Course, after turning in a round of 80 June 2 at a Division 3 sectional hosted by Wabeno/Laona at McCauslin Brook Golf & Country Club in Lakewood.

Two local teams and one other individual also made it to sectional play. Weyauwega-Fremont’s Alex Hulbert and Manawa’s team of Ryan Schuelke, David Blum, Alex Kowaleski, Matt Radloff and Scott Schuelke competed with Mortenson in Lakewood, while Waupaca’s team of Turner Kelly, Ben Stone, Hunter Carrick, Max Hansen and Frankie Ellingson headed to a Division 2 sectional at Freedom’s Irish Waters Golf Club.

Division 2 Freedom Sectional
FREEDOM – Waupaca placed fourth out of 12 teams with a score of 342.

Individual scores for the Comets were Kelly, tied for ninth (81); Stone, tied for 14th (82); Carrick, tied for 31st (89); Hansen, tied for 37th (90); and Ellingson, tied for 44th (92).

Winnebago Lutheran’s Cris Colla and Berlin’s Sam Marks advanced to state as individuals with rounds of 72 and 74, respectively. Marinette and Freedom advanced as teams.

Division 3 Wabeno/Laona Sectional
LAKEWOOD – Mortenson was one of three golfers to qualify for state as an individual, along with St. Mary Central’s Grant Boyson, who led all golfers with a 78, and Shiocton’s Max Beecher, who also finished with a round of 80.

Crandon and Gibraltar qualified for state as teams, while Manawa placed ninth out of 12 teams with a score of 374.
Hulbert tied with two other golfers for 11th place with an 84.

“He shot an 84 and tied for 11th place out of 72 golfers, which is still something to be proud of,” coach Melinda Brace said. “He is determined to work hard on his game over the summer and qualify for state as a senior.”

Ryan Schuelke led Manawa with an 82, good enough for eighth place. Other scores for the Wolves were Blum, tied for 36th (94); Radloff, tied for 50th (98); Kowaleski, 57th (100); and Scott Schuelke, tied for 65th (104).
