Red Hatters enjoy spa day

Iola gals get gussied up at ILA

By Holly Neumann

The Iola Red Hatters recently visited Iola Living Assistance to have a spa day with the residents.

Armed with curling irons and make-up, lotions and perfume and even nail polish, it was a day filled with fun.

“I saw a video about this on YouTube,” said Georgine Demling, who organized the event. “I thought that this was something we could do and would be a lot of fun.”

Maureen Speck, ILA activities director, thought it was a great event as well.

“We are always looking for different activities to try,” she said. “They are loving this.”

According to Speck, events such as this are good for self esteem of the residents.

“You know that some of these ladies always wore make-up when they were young,” she said. “It sparks a lot of good memories. They will be talking about this for days on end.”

The residents definitely enjoyed the day as well.

“I was a little bashful, but it was fun,” said Doris Beier. “They were all so happy and excited to fancy us up.”

“I only had my nails done,” said Sylvia Wogsland. “One of the ladies here today used to deliver my Meals On Wheels when I was still living at home. It was so good to see her again.”

The hope is that the Red Hatters will make this an annual event.

“This was a fun activity not only for the residents, but the Red Hatters as well,” said Nancy Chambers, who also helped organize the day. “Everyone enjoyed getting dolled up and visiting.”

And at the end of the day, with make-up and jewelry on the residents and a variety of hats on all, smiles filled the room.

“I am glad they made the time for us,” said Harriet Grieber. “I am usually a plain person, but this really made me smile.”

“Bless these ladies for coming here,” said Helen Huetttl. “This was a lot of fun.”
