Chalk O’ the Town

Waupaca sidewalks to be covered in art

The sidewalks in front of Waupaca area businesses and on the city square will soon be covered in chalk.

Chalk O’ the Town will again be held this August, giving merchants the opportunity to turn their sidewalks into works of art.

If a sidewalk is too bumpy outside of a business, the owner will do window painting instead.

In addition, this year’s event will expand and give youth the chance to be creative around the city square with an afternoon of chalking.

Chalk O’ the Town will begin the week of Aug. 9 and lead up to the ninth annual Arts on the Square.

The arts festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 14 and 15, on the city square.

The chalk art in front of businesses will be done throughout that week by members of the Waupaca, King & In-Between retailers group.

The Waupaca Community Arts Board will judge their work on the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 13 and name three winners.

Then, from 2-5 p.m. on that Thursday, area youth are invited to chalk the sidewalks around the city square in a new event being sponsored by the retailers group.

Allyce Lees, Michele Drake and Anita Olson will judge their work.

There will be refreshments for the children, with chips and popcorn also for sale.

Youth interested in participating may pick up entry forms at Embellishments, the Waupaca Community Arts Center and The Paint Store, which are all located in downtown Waupaca.

The Aug. 13 youth chalking event will be followed by a 5 p.m. concert, on the bandstand.
