Dorice Bassewitz, 92, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2015.

A Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Sunday, August 23, 2015 at the Hebrew Cemetery in Kohler, WI.

Dorice was born in Poland to Isadore and Leah Markman. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1929 settling in New London, Wisconsin. She later graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, with a degree in economics. In 1947 Dorice began her 40 year marriage to Max Bassewitz. During that time, they lived in New London, worked together in the family business, Markman’s Department Store, and had two children, Barbara and Jim. After Max’s death, Dorice moved to Des Moines in 1989 to be near her family. She had many creative passions including quilting, knitting, crocheting and crafting handmade cards. Much of her work she donated to various charities. The homes of her daughter and two grandchildren are adorned with quilts, pillows, and teddy bears. And, everyone always received a custom made card on each birthday and valentines day. Dorice was an active community member, belonging to Tifereth Israel Synagogue and working with Goodwill Industries, The American Cancer Society, and the Linus Society. Dorice will be remembered for her positive attitude and her loving, caring ways.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara (David) Lettween of Des Moines; grandsons, Peter Lettween of Des Moines; Joe (Jessica) Lettween of San Francisco; great-granddaughter, Beatrice Lettween and many nieces and nephews.
