Waupaca volleyball team struggles in conference

By Greg Seubert

Waupaca’s volleyball team won one of four matches Sept. 18 at a tournament at Newman Catholic in Wausau.

The Comets are also looking for their first North Eastern Conference win, as Waupaca fell to Denmark Sept. 17 at home.

Newman Catholic Invitational
WAUSAU – Waupaca fell to Newman Catholic (25-11, 25-14), McDonell Central (25-17, 25-14) and Stanley-Boyd (25-12, 25-8) before picking up a 25-18, 25-16 win over Almond-Bancroft.

“We played some very good teams and did some good things ourselves,” coach Chelsea Benitz said. “Our outside hitter, Tessa Navin, sat the day out with some shoulder trouble, but we adjusted and got a few different players some more experience.

“Our main goal right now is reducing the errors we make and becoming more aggressive on offense,” she said. “Brenna Oleson and Abby Wolfgram have been playing well in the back row for us and Kat Otter-Giese works incredibly hard as a setter to get to every set.”

Denmark 3, Waupaca 0
WAUPACA – The Comets fell to the Vikings 25-14, 25-17, 25-13.

Wolfgram finished with 12 digs, while Otter-Giese had a team-high 13 assists.

Waupaca will return to North Eastern play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Fox Valley Lutheran in Appleton before heading to Abbotsford Saturday, Sept. 26, for the Bud Nelson Invitational.
