Smith, Elizabeth “Betty” E.

Elizabeth “Betty” E. Smith, age 98, of Fremont, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Trinity Terrace in New London.

She was born on May 2, 1917 in Fremont, the daughter of the late John and Hulda (Gorges) Kempf. On January 23, 1937 Betty married Frank Smith. Together they owned and operated Fremont Mobil for many years. Frank preceded her in death on November 6, 1988. Betty was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fremont, where she was involved with the Ladies Aid and the Finance Committee. She worked as a hairdresser in Milwaukee and then in Fremont. She also volunteered her time for Bethesda. She was a member of the Dance Club, and enjoyed quilt making, playing the piano, knitting, crocheting and bowling.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Lorraine (Jerry) Zeichert, Fremont; two sons, John (Sandy) Smith, Weyauwega and Joe (Conni) Smith, Fremont; nine grandchildren, Barb (Bill) Buchholz, Greenville; Patti (Mike) Beilfuss, Pine River; Chuck (Jodi) Zeichert, Weyauwega; Kim (Kirk) Delwich, Fremont; Mary (Peter) Griffin, Manawa; Lori (Steve) Gabrielson, Pine River; Jennie (Joel) Harris, Almond; Dan (Sara) Smith, Oshkosh; Cathie (Ben) Lyons, Waupaca; a grandson-in-law, Steve (Julie) Bellile, New London; 23 great-grandchildren, Stephanie (Jered) Wilson, Brittany (TC) Bartol, Nick (Caitlin) Koch, Tyler (Meg) Buchholz, Christi (Jake Gabrilska) Beilfuss, Mitchel (Jill VanEperen) Beilfuss, Carlie (Treg DeSantis) Akey, Lauren (Jordan Haase) Akey, Bryce (Hailee Gorges) Akey, Connor and Riley Delwich, Matthew Zeichert, Molly (Brandon Huhn) Griffin, Garret and Bryan Griffin, Amber Gabrielson, Alysha (Elliot) Olson, Joel, Michael and Grace Harris, Dylan Lyons, Madeline and Bennett Smith; seven great-great-grandchildren, Morgan, Danny, Daisy, Brody, Stella, Blakely and Charlie, and one on the way; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Alvina, two grandchildren, Jean Bellile and Ryan Akey and three great-grandchildren, Eric Buchholz, Blake Radtke and Ryan Zeichert.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 107 Tustin Rd., Fremont. Pastor Stephen Pope will officiate. Burial will be in East Bloomfield Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, at the Lewin Funeral Home from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday, at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund has been established for St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Betty’s family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at St. Joseph Residence and Trinity Terrace for all of the care and compassion given to her during her time there.
