Field trip to cranberry marshes

Fourth graders experience harvest first hand

The fourth grade classes at Rexford/Longfellow Elementary School in Clintonville recently witnessed cranberry harvesting operations at the Dempze Cranberry Marsh in Biron.

This learning experience was made possible through a grant donated by the “Natural World For Kids Fund.”

The guide for the students at the cranberry marsh was Mrs. Dempze, who has been running cranberry marshes for more than 30 years. The students learned about all phases of the harvesting operation and received explanations of the processes. Dempze also explained the procedures that cranberry marsh owners go through in order to ensure environmental stewardship.

Dempze said she always enjoys the Clintonville students visiting. Students expressed excitement about all of the different operations that they saw at the cranberry marsh.
