Waupaca netters’ season ends

Bulldogs take three of four games from Comets

By Greg Seubert

Waupaca’s volleyball team ended its season Oct. 20 in the first round of the WIAA state tournament.

The Comets took the first game of their Division 2 regional quarterfinal with New London 25-19, but dropped the next three to the Bulldogs, 25-19, 25-21, 21-7.

Katerina Otter-Giese had nine assists for Waupaca, while Alison Schwaegler had five kills and Kathryn Hazen served up three aces.

Coach Chelsea Benitz said the team improved throughout the season.

“The girls significantly improved from our first scrimmage at the beginning of the year,” she said. “Our hits and passes are beginning to look much better, especially in practice. We lacked the confidence in games – especially the last one against New London – to come out on top.”

The Comets were swept in their first seven North Eastern Conference matches, but ended conference play with wins over Freedom and Marinette.

“We had a very young team this year and lacked experience at the varsity level,” Benitz said. “The speed of the game is much faster than what our girls on the junior varsity and freshmen teams last year saw. With a year under their belts, we are looking to improve our place in conference next year and our confidence so we can come out winners in close games.

“We will greatly miss senior Brenna Oleson and her leadership next year and will need to find players to fill that void,” she added. “I am proud of how far they have come, but they know a lot of work will need to be put in in the off-season for a successful year in 2016.”
