Fuerst, Janis

Janis L. (Knuth) Fuerst, 80, New London, went to her heavenly home on November 17, 2015 where she was surrounded by her loving family by her side.

Janis was born February 13, 1935 in the Town of New Castle, Virginia. Her family later moved to New London where she spent her summers as a child at her Uncle Earl’s Farm. There she tended to dairy cows and horses. Janis attended and graduated from New London High School. She later married the love of her life, Glenn Fuerst, in January 1955. They had just celebrated there 60th wedding anniversary; together they owned and operated their family farm in Maple Creek for 40 years and raised their four children. Janis was the president of “WIFE” (Women Involved in Farm Economics) for many years. She enjoyed her horses, gardening, canning, baking and spending time with her family, shooting critters out her back window and working the family farm.

Janis is survived by her children, Wayne A. Fuerst, Boston, MA; Tregg (Terry) Fuerst, New London; her son-in-law, Tim Van Asten, Greenville; also grandchildren: Whitney and Tristin Fuerst; Raleigh, Kaz and Blaine Van Asten; Magen and Haley Fuerst. She is further survived by her sisters and brother: Chris (Malcom) Cook, Marta (Gill) De Venecia, Kathy (Terry) Thompson and Otto (Debbie) Knuth; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Rueben and Catherine Knuth, husband Glenn, daughter Pamela Van Asten, son Scott Fuerst and father and mother in-law, Clarence and Lorina Fuerst.

The Christian Funeral service for Janis will be held on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church, New London with Rev. William Heiges officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the New Maple Creek Cemetery, Town of Maple Creek.
