T-Birds split first two games

I-S girls’ basketball team to host Manawa Dec. 1

The Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team opened the season with a win over Wild Rose and a loss to Westfield.

Westfield handed the Thunderbirds a 40-31 loss Nov. 20 and I-S picked up a 29-21 win Nov. 17 in Wild Rose.

WESTFIELD – The T-Birds trailed 23-17 at halftime.

Leighten Fischer led I-S with 14 points and she added eight rebounds and three steals. Baleigh Fuhs led the team with 10 rebounds, while Mia Wandtke and Kaylin Ellioff added eight points and eight rebounds, respectively.

WILD ROSE – The T-Birds hit only five of 14 free throws, but held on to knock off the Wildcats in the season opener for both teams.

Wild Rose took a 13-12 lead into the locker room at halftime, but the T-Birds outscored the home team 17-8 in the second half.

Fischer led the T-Birds with 11 points and six rebounds, while Ellioff had five rebounds and three steals and Kendall Johnson chipped in with five steals.

The T-Birds will host Manawa at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the Central Wisconsin-8 Conference opener.
