Waupaca Area outscores teams 17-2

Girls get home game for WIAA tourney

It looks like the Waupaca Area girls’ hockey team is peaking at the right time.

The team wrapped up the regular season Feb. 5-6 by outscoring Lakeland and Tomahawk 17-2 in a pair of Great Northern Conference wins at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center.

Waupaca Area has a No. 4 bye for the upcoming WIAA tournament and will open postseason play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at home against Wisconsin Rapids/Stevens Point/Marshfield. The winner will likely face the top-seeded Central Wisconsin Storm Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Waupaca Area 8, Lakeland 0
A six-goal first period helped Waupaca Area knock off the Thunderbirds Feb. 6 for the second time this season.

Markie Ash had a hat trick with three goals in the period, while Kylie Hiddemen found the net twice and Avrey Simonson also scored.

Ash and Simonson scored in the game’s opening two minutes, while Hiddemen scored her two goals and Ash came up with her third in the final 1:41 of the period.

Ash scored her fourth goal in the second period, while Jessica Hamm scored 27 seconds later to complete the scoring.

Waupaca Area outshot Lakeland 32-8. Simonson led the team with two assists, while Ash, Hiddemen, Hamm, Jamie Slattery and Katarina Otter-Giese added one each.

Eight different players scored for Waupaca Area Feb. 5 in a win over the Hatchets.

Chloe Buster had two goals, while Kara Kohutek, Anna Ryder, Kiersten Block, Joceybeth Barraza, Hiddemen, Ryder, Hamm and Ash added one.

Slattery and Ash added a team-high three assists, while Hiddemen, Otter-Giese, Barraza and Simonson had one.
