A late afternoon fire caused extensive damage to a home south of New London on Monday, March 28.

At 4:39 p.m. New London Fire Department was dispatched to N3290 Bean City Rd. in the town of Mukwa. A caller reported she arrived home to smoke coming from the eaves and a flame on the south wall.

New London Fire Captain Don Conat said the fire originated in the basement laundry room and ultimately caused the floor above it to collapse. The cause remains under investigation.

A firefighter from Hortonville-Hortonia Fire District was taken to the hospital by ambulance for a check-up. Conat said the individual did not get injured fighting the fire.

The home belongs to Karen Hackfort.

Firefighters responded from Dale Fire Department and Hortonville-Hortonia Fire District, and Fremont-Wolf River Fire Department provided water. Firefighters remained on scene until just after 8 p.m.
