Weather keeps Indians off new field

Ceremony rescheduled for April 21

By Greg Seubert

Instead of working out on its renovated field, the Weyauwega-Fremont baseball team has been stuck inside.

“We’d love to have some innings in, especially our pitchers facing batters and live hitting,” coach Joe Sambs said before a recent practice at Weyauwega’s Main Street gym. “We can’t control Mother Nature, so we’re inside.”

Getting valuable practice time outdoors has been hard to come by because of the weather. The Indians have already had to postpone their season opener March 31 against Wautoma. The team had planned a ceremony for that day with representatives from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, Appleton’s Minor League baseball team that donated sod from Fox Cities Stadium for a field renovation project.

That ceremony has tentatively been rescheduled for Thursday, April 21, before the Indians host Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Until then, however, the Indians have a few games scheduled, including hosting Winneconne April 4, playing at Mosinee April 5 and heading to Waupaca Friday, April 8, for a 4:30 p.m. nonconference matchup with the Comets.

“They’re ready to go,” Sambs said. “They’re practicing hard, they’re working their butts off and they’re ready to get outside.”

Returning players include Logan Bosquez, a first-team all-conference player last year as a sophomore.

“Logan was our best pitcher last year and one of our better hitters,” Sambs said. “We’re going to count on him for a lot of innings this year and produce with the stick.”

Other returning players include seniors Peter Nicholson, Austin Baehnman, Ricky Schroeder.

“We’re going to be young,” Sambs said. “There’s a lot of turnover this year. The senior class and the junior class were always small. I’ve kind of known this was coming for the last couple of years. It’s not a surprise. It’s exciting because we have a lot of freshmen and a lot of sophomores and we’re going to give a lot of guys an opportunity to play.”

Twenty-six players are out for baseball, which means the Indians can field varsity and junior varsity teams.

“Whenever we can have two teams, which we’ve been able to the last five years, that’s great,” Sambs said. “That’s what we’re hoping for. A lot of guys are going to get a lot of playing time facing varsity pitching or JV pitching. They’ll get a lot of experience.”

The Indians compete with Iola-Scandinavia, Manawa, Bonduel, Amherst, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Shiocton and Pacelli in the Central Wisconsin-8 Conference.

The Indians finished fifth in the standings last year with a 5-9 record and were 8-18 overall.

“Anybody can beat anybody and we’ve had that in the past,” Sambs said. “Bonduel had a great year last year. Pacelli’s always at the top. Shiocton’s always tough. Iola’s tough. There’s no game that we’re ever going to take lightly.”

The team has been able to have a handful of practices on the renovated field.

“It looks really good and we’re excited to play on it,” Sambs said. “You can tell the kids like it. It’s something different and it’s better.”
