Students present jazz concert

Waupaca High School ensembles to perform

The Waupaca High School Music Department will present its annual Jazz Concert at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, in the commons.

The performance features students in both bands and choirs, including the Dixie Band, Jazz Ensemble, MadJazzers, Treble and Mixed Choirs, and the Freshman Jazz Combo.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Mixed Choir singers will share the classic swing tune “Sing, Sing, Sing!” as well as an arrangement of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.”

Treble Choir will sing a set that includes t “Someone To Watch Over Me” and “Watch What Happens.”

Pacappellas is a new format of the Women’s Concert Chorale, and they have prepared two numbers, “My Funny Valentine” and a “The Boy From New York City.”

The MadJazz Choir is known for its performance of Madrigal selections during the holiday season, but studies jazz during the second semester. They recently participated in the Vocal Jazz Festival at UW-Marathon County in Wausau, performing and participating in clinics and master classes with Jenn and Shon Parker from McNalley School of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota.

They will share their set of jazz tunes including “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “The Way You Look Tonight” and an acapella arrangement of the Beatles’ “Drive My Car.”

On the instrumental end, familiar tunes such as “On Green Dolphin Street” and “Where Or When” will be performed by the Jazz Ensemble. These selections were recently performed by the ensemble at the Orlandofest competition during their recent trip to Florida.

The Dixieland Band will perform two to three selections including “Nobody’s Sweetheart” and “At the Jazz Band Ball” arranged by Ray Rozelle. The Freshman Jazz Combo have been rehearsing to present the tunes “Sidewinder” and “Fly Me to the Moon.”
The ensembles are under the direction of Mark Kryshak, Kira Morrissey, and Kathy Alan.
