Summer fun at school

Manawa offers enrichment programs

By Holly Neumann

The Manawa School District recently held registration for its 2016 summer school enrichment programs, open to students entering 4k-12th grade.

Families were lined up to choose from a variety of activities that ranged from basketry to computers, scrapbooking to sports and even cooking.

Bailey Ort, 9, registered for Band, Math and Basketry.

“I have taken summer school for two years,” said Ort. “Basketry is going to be so much fun and so interesting. I sure hope I don’t get any splinters.”

Amollia Riske signed up for Mad Science, Scrapbooking and Outdoor Explorer.

“I am really into space and just seeing what I can do with science,” she said. “Summer school is a fun activity that you can do with all your friends.”

Carey Andersen was there to register her daughter Kadence for the cooking course.

“It is nice to see that it’s not just all academic,” said Andersen. “They get exposed to so many different things that they don’t normally do during the school year.”

Andersen noted that her daughter took the cooking course last year as well and was very excited when John Smith, from the Manawa Steak House, gave a demonstration on how to make his macaroni and cheese.

“His mac and cheese is awesome,” said Kadence. “I hope he comes again this year.”

The students all agreed summer school is a lot of fun.
