Dr. Claudena Skran will present “Global events that shape Wisconsin’s future” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 6 at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Hosted by Winchester Academy, the program is free and open to the public.

Wisconsin faces a number of important challenges in the global economy. Fifty years ago, the state was located in the center of the world’s largest and most successful manufacturing economy. Today, Wisconsin is distant from the growing economic centers in Asia and Latin America.

In her presentation, Skran, will explore how global trends in trade, technology, and social movements are shaping our state.

The West Professor of Economics and Social Science at Lawrence University, Skran was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, travelling to almost 25 different developed and developing countries. She travelled to the Soviet Union before it collapsed, providing her with insights into Cold War politics. She conducted field research in El Salvador, Mexico and Belize.

In 2005 Skran spent six months in Sierra Leone on a Fulbright scholarship, studying refugee resettlement and post-conflict development. She has subsequently made numerous return trips to Sierra Leone for research projects, often with Lawrence students.

She is the founder of KidsGive, a scholarship program that supports nearly 500 students at three different schools in Sierra Leone.

Drawing from both her research and her extensive travels, Skran will highlight strategies she believes would help Wisconsin navigate in the global economy, including greater promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Skran received her bachelor’s degree in social science from Michigan State University and both her master’s and doctorate degrees in international relations at Oxford University. She joined the Lawrence University faculty in 1990.

Winchester Academy is funded through sponsors and tax-deductible donations.

This program is sponsored by Ruby and Barry Shaw.
