One area team and three individuals competed June 6-7 at the WIAA state boys’ golf meet at Verona’s University Ridge Golf Course.

Waupaca’s Mason Gardner finished 45th in Division 2 with rounds of 96 and 82; Manawa’s Ryan Schuelke placed 11th in Division 3 after carding an 80 and 81; Amherst’s Robert Johannes tied for 37th in Division 3 with rounds of 94; and the Iola-Scandinavia boys’ team finished eighth in Division 3 with scores of 378 and 393.

Zach Mortenson led the Thunderbirds with rounds of 78 and 85 good enough for 13th place overall, followed by Jon Bauer (85 and 89, 26th), Cody Breitzke (100 and 117, 49th), Carter Przybylski (116 and 104, 220) and Justin Krause (115 and 115, 51st).

“We had a wonderful three days at state and had a challenge playing this tough course,” I-S coach Alan Bauer said. “Monday was our better scoring day while the wind was blowing and showers kept just missing the course.”

Mortenson was tied for sixth place after the first day, while Bauer ended the firs day tied for 20th.

“Jon was solid with an 85 and stuck a number of shots close on the par-threes,” Bauer said.

The T-Birds need to be on the course by 6:45 a.m. to start the second day.

“The weather was cool and overcast,” Bauer said. “We started on the back nine and the boys struggled to get off to a good start. I am very proud of these young men and their integrity for getting through the challenging moments of the tournament. We had a great season that finished with a surprise trip to state Tournament.

“There were many good holes played and each of our golfers lived some great memories of participating in the state tournament,” he added. “We had a great number of fans that came down to watch. It was great to see the hometown faces and hear the cheers of support for our team.”
