Firebirds to play at Lambeau

Training camp kicks off for Packers fans

By Greg Seubert

Iola-Scandinavia’s youth football teams are used to playing in front of small crowds at Thunderbird Field in Scandinavia.

The Firebirds now have a chance to suit up in front of a much larger crowd, as the program’s Pee-Wee and Junior Pee-Wee teams have been invited to Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers.

The teams are scheduled to scrimmage against the Westfield Thunder Saturday, Aug. 12, during halftime of the Packers’ preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.

“While we are working with our friends in Westfield to secure as many tickets as possible for our community, at this moment, our allotment from the Packers covers football players and coaches,” Scott Tappa wrote on the team’s Facebook page. “We will keep everyone posted if and when more tickets become available.”

Brett Favre’s induction into the NFL Hall of Fame is just one of the highlights of the Packers’ preseason, which got underway July 26 with the opening of training camp.

Fans will have plenty of opportunities to get an up-close look at the team during 15 practices at Ray Nitschke Field, as practices open to the public are scheduled for July 26, 27, 28 and 30; and Aug. 1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 14, 15, 22, 23, 29 and 30.

Favre, the Packers’ quarterback from 1992 until 2008, will join the NFL Hall of Fame Saturday, Aug. 6, at a ceremony in Canton, Ohio, The Packers will open the season the following day against the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL Hall of Fame Game in Canton.

The Cleveland game is the team’s home opener. Green Bay also has preseason games scheduled against the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.

This year marks the Packers’ 71st training camp, a tradition coach Curly Lambeau began in 1946. Long-standing traditions at camp include players riding kids’ bicycles to practice. Players interact with fans during the quarter-mile ride from Lambeau Field to Ray Nitschke Field.
