Scandinavia Corn Roast

Parade, baseball, tractor pulls, music, magic

By Mitchell J. Swenson

A full weekend of family entertainment is planned Friday through Sunday, Aug. 5-7, in Ellison Memorial Park, Scandinavia.

The Scandinavia Corn Roast offers bounce houses, petting zoo, woodcarving contests, magic acts, a parade, ball games, tractor and truck pulls, music, and free corn on Sunday.

Friday features a fish fry, the Scandinavia Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Firefighter’s Dance, plus the Scandinavia Viking Baseball Club sponsors a softball tournament.

Saturday includes a parade at 10:30 a.m., followed by a truck pull and the softball tournament. The parade theme is “Who’s Your Super Hero?”

Sunday includes an outdoor church service, BABA ball games, Farm & Antique Tractor Pull, the Corn Roast and Pie and Ice Cream Social. Sunday is the only day that the free corn is offered.

The Scandinavia Corn Roast Chainsaw Artist Wood Sculpting Competition, which began in 2012, will hold various events all three days. To participate, send an email to [email protected] or call 715-498-0455. For information about the competition, visit www.cornroast.net.

The live music includes: Friday – “Highfield Drive Band” from Milwaukee; Saturday – “Orlow and The CWB Band,” “Railroad Ron” and the headliner “Ask Your Mother;” Sunday – church service music by “Shepherd’s Quarter,” polka music by “Old Time Sounds” and the progressive high-energy string band “Horseshoes and Handgrenades.”

The Scandinavia Corn Roast started in 1969 as a one day August event to compliment the Scandinavia Free Fair held earlier in the summer. As time went on, the fair was disbanded but the corn roast has grown into a three day event.

The annual event is sponsored by the Scandinavia Booster Club.
