Two charged with attempted burglary

Simpson’s in downtown Waupaca reported an attempted break-in while the restaurant was open.

Skylar R. Basina, 24, and Christopher J. Hendricks, 20, both of Waupaca, are each charged with attempted burglary and criminal damage to property.

Around 9 p.m. Saturday, July 30, the owners of Simpson’s called Waupaca police and reported two men had just tried to break into the apartment located above the restaurant. They were holding one of the men.

According to the criminal complaint, a bartender was behind the restaurant taking a break when he heard people on the roof. He notified the owners.

Carey Simpson went up the stairs leading from Main Street, while Amy Simpson waited in the alley at the bottom of the stairs.

Two men came down the back stairs. Amy Simpson grabbed one of them, identified as Hendricks, but the other suspect ran away.

Hendricks told police he and Basina had gone to the apartment to buy pot, but nobody was home. He accused Basina of taking a rod found on the roof and smashing the window of the apartment’s entrance.

The employee who lives in the apartment had moved there just three days earlier and did not know Basina well enough to speak with him, the complaint says.

Basina was arrested after officers found him walking on Main Street about one block from the restaurant.

Police report Basina denied going to the apartment to buy marijuana and accused Hendricks of breaking the window.
