Tonnsen, Marjorie M. (Jones)

Marjorie M. (Jones) Tonnsen, age 91, passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI.

She was born November 10, 1925 in Pardeeville, WI, daughter of Royce and Gladys (Loveland) Breneman. Marjorie graduated from Pardeeville High School in 1943 and two years later graduated from Columbia Co. Normal School. She then began teaching in a rural, one room school. Marjorie received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from UW-Oshkosh in 1961 and went on to receive her master’s degree in elementary education from UW-Stevens Point in 1974. She taught for 32 years in Columbia and Marquette Counties. On June 7, 1947, Marjorie married Casey Jones in Pardeeville, WI and he preceded her in death on June 1, 1980. On November 11, 1982, she married her second husband, Burton Tonnsen, in Las Vegas, NV and he preceded her in death on August 30, 2004. Through the years, Marjorie was very active with the American Legion Auxiliary Post and Unit 351 in Montello, and also the American Legion on a state level. She was also involved with the Women’s Club in Montello and in her volunteer work at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King for 35 years. After retirement, Marjorie spent her winters in the southwest and most recently for 19 years in Weslaco, TX, where she volunteered at Knapp Medical Center. Additionally, for a number of years she volunteered with the noon meal program at the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Stevens Point. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends. Marjorie will be dearly missed by all of her loving family and friends.

Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Virginia “Ginger” (James) Groshek of Stevens Point, WI; her son, Charles (Judy) Jones of Apopka, FL; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Jones of Stevens Point, WI; grandchildren: Carrie Jones of Stevens Point, WI; Laura Jones of Oshkosh, WI; Kathryn (Don) Riddle of Wausau, WI and Joseph Groshek of Stevens Point, WI; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Knutson of Minocqua, WI. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Royce and Gladys Breneman; first and second husbands, Casey Jones and Burton Tonnsen; a sister, Lila (Robert) Reeve; and two brothers, Maurice (Joan) Breneman and Wayne (Kay) Breneman.

A Funeral Service will be on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Main Chapel at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. Chaplain Rich Engle will officiate. A visitation will be held on Thursday evening, March 16th, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca and again on Friday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Main Chapel at the Wisconsin Veterans Home. Burial will be at the Central WI Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.
