Zack Thuerman scored off a set piece from Cam Borland in the 74-minute mark to give the Comets the North Eastern Conference win over the Tigers in the first varsity soccer game at Comet Field.

Both teams had several chances to score. Waupaca goalkeeper Bailey Colden made saves at the end of both halves and Wrightstown’s Jake Wesner stopped a penalty kick.

“This is a big win for a young team,” coach Cory Nagel said. “To be able to beat a tough conference opponent and senior-heavy team like Wrightstown is great for this group. Add in that it was our inaugural game on Comet Field, this is something this group will remember for a long time.”

Colden finished with 11 saves.

Waupaca 4, Nekoosa 0
Thuerman, Keagan Turrubiates, Bryton Sipp and Dawson Patzke scored for Waupaca. Jack Snider had two assists and Keenin Polebitski added one.

The Comets will travel to Seymour Thursday, Sept. 7, for a 6:30 p.m. nonconference matchup with the Thunder before heading to Wausau Saturday, Sept. 9, for the Wausau West Invitational. Games will start at 9 a.m.
