Waupaca hosts race

T-Birds have two top-three finishes

After competing in its first five meets on the road, the Waupaca cross country team found itself on familiar ground.

The Comets hosted the annual Waupaca Invitational Sept. 28 at Waupaca High School.

Although Marinette didn’t win a team championship, the Marines had both first-place finishers.

Carson Polomis won the boys’ race in 17:06, while Katelyn Kitzinger turned in a time of 19:44 to win the girls’ race.

Winneconne and Fox Valley Lutheran won boys’ and girls’ team championships, respectively.

Team scores for the boys were Winneconne (71), Peshtigo (95), Fox Valley Lutheran (98), Amherst (109), Tomahawk (112), Waupaca (141), Seymour (183), Marinette (190), Rhinelander (239), Iola-Scandinavia (245), Wrightstown (248) and St. Mary Catholic (307).

Team scores for the girls were Fox Valley Lutheran (58), Winneconne (85), Tomahawk (108), Rhinelander (118), Peshtigo (139), Amherst and Seymour (147), Wrightstown (164), Marinette (178) and Waupaca (263). Iola-Scandinavia and St. Mary Catholic had incomplete teams.

Waupaca’s finishers in the boys’ race included Danny Esch (20th, 18:37); Andy Schroeder (23rd, 18:51); Tyler Rogney (26th, 18:55); Colby Nimmer (29th, 19:07); and Abram Jackson (43rd, 19:39).

Kristin Petkovsek led the Waupaca girls by placing 45th in 24:18. Other places and times for the Comets included Mya Snyder (48th, 24:39); Brooke Hansen (57th, 25:41); Miranda Brunner (63rd, 27:27); and Gabi Wennesberg (66th, 28:39).

Iola-Scandinavia had a pair of top-three runners in Joe Makovec and Erika Kisting.

Makovec placed second in the boys’ race in 17:35, while Kisting turned in a time of 20:25 to place third in the girls’ competition.

Other runners for the boys included Erick Kriewaldt (54th, 20:36); Erik Grenlie (59th, 21:19); Trenton Niemi (64th, 21:40); and Bryce Johnson (66th, 21:49).

Other finishers for the I-S girls were Makenna Brown (22nd, 22:57); Natalie Rustad (49th, 24:46); and Haley Ullom (65th, 28:21).

Waupaca and Iola-Scandinavia have meets scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 5. The Comets will head to the Seymour Invitational, while the Thunderbirds will compete at the Weyauwega-Fremont Invitational in Weyauwega.
