Three face drug charges

Alleged drug trafficker back in jail

Ongoing drug investigations resulted in prosecutors filing felony charges against three people Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Denise M. Guantes, 50, Milwaukee, is charged with three counts of delivery of heroin, delivery of amphetamine and delivery of narcotics.

Gary J. Herwig, 66, Waupaca, is charged with two felony counts of delivery of marijuana and one count of delivery of narcotics.

Korey J. Thoma, 31, Iola, is charged with delivery of heroin and falsely representing a non-controlled substance.

According to the criminal complaint, a confidential informant (CI) met Thoma in a gas station parking lot on May 30 and paid $250 for an aluminum foil bindle of what appeared to be heroin but failed to test positive.

On Sept. 7, a different CI met with Thoma at his apartment on McKinley Street in Iola and purchased a gram of heroin for $320. The substance tested positive for heroin, the complaint says.

According to the criminal complaint against Herwig, he sold one-eighth of an ounce of marijuana for $60 to a CI on June 19, five oxycodone pills for $170 to a CI on July 26, and one-quarter of an ounce of marijuana for $100 on Aug. 8.

According to the criminal complaint against Guantes, she sold heroin to a CI on May 3, May 16 and May 17, meth to a CI on May 17 and oxycodone to a CI on July 16.

At the time of the alleged sales, Guantes was living on the 500 block of Demarest Avenue.

On July 20, Waupaca County deputies and Waupaca police executed a search warrant at Guantes home and reported finding 2.5 grams of heroin, two digital scales, a roll of aluminum foil, foil bindles and a dish with white powdery residue in straight, parallel lines. They also found empty prescription pill bottles, morphine sulfate and oxycodone (opioids) in Guantes’ room.

Guantes was charged with possession of heroin with intent to deliver, maintaining a drug trafficking place, illegal possession of prescription drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was initially held in custody on a $10,000 cash bond.

On Sept. 12, Guantes’ cash bond was reduced to $1,800 and she was released from custody after posting bond on Sept. 22.

She is currently in custody on a $7,500 cash bond.

Thoma remains in custody on a $2,500 cash bond, while Herwig was released on a $2,000 signature bond.
