Roberts, David O.

David O. Roberts, a proud World War II veteran, received his eternal wings on Friday, November 17, 2017 at Wisconsin Veteran’s Home in King.

He was born on April 1, 1924, in New London, to Oliver and Olga (Christensen) Roberts. Being an April fool’s baby, his birthday was never forgotten. David was drafted into the Army in January, 1943 – he was stationed at Normandy Northern France Rhineland Central Europe for two years. On November 29, 1947, he was united in marriage to Phyllis A. Beattie in Georgia. In his early years he worked road construction for Badger Highway and Murphy Brothers. In 1964, he and his wife Phyllis purchased the London Inn Tavern, on North Water Street in New London. They had a successful eleven years in business. David traveled to numerous World War II Veteran’s reunions with his wife and sisters-in-law Connie and Betty. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often picking them up from school when they got in trouble, and instead of making them do their school work, he took them to buy bait and let them go fishing. He enjoyed wood working, especially with his neighbor Dan Hedtke, on many home remodeling projects. He made many keepsakes for the grandchildren. David volunteered his time at the nursing home in Weyauwega and never hesitated to help someone in need. He was an extremely generous man. He was a member of Emanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in New London.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Phyllis; children: Marvin (Linda) Roberts, Linda (Brian) Zietlow, Barabara Thayer and Pamela (Donald) Behm; grandchildren: Tracy (Brad) Elsner, Cody Roberts, Stacy (Paul) Bartline, Tammy (Doug) Sorge, Bridgitt (Jim) Dumbleton, Mark Thayer IV, Jeremiah Thayer, Katie (Wade) Wisnefske, Kimberly Polanco; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is further survived by three sisters: Phyllis Quaintance, Joyce (Raymond) Voight, Judy Krause; a brother-in-law Lloyd Stern, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. David was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law June (Harold) Hutchison; sister Catherine Stern; brothers: Victor, Fritz and George; also brothers-in-law, Donald Quaintance and Tony Krause.

The Christian Funeral for David will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Emanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be in Floral Hill Cemetery in New London. A visitation for David will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 from 4-6 p.m. at the Cline & Hanson Funeral Home in New London and also from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at the church until the time of the service.
