By Greg Seubert

The Waupaca girls’ basketball team handed Marinette a 42-39 North Eastern Conference loss Dec. 2.

Waupaca built a 13-2 lead in the first half. The Marines scored the next 10 points to cut the lead to 13-12 and eventually tied the game at 15-15, but trailed 17-15 at halftime.

Katelyn Kitzinger gave Marinette its first lead – 24-23 – in the second half. The lead changed hands three more times before Emma Smidt’s free throw broke a 36-36 tie and gave the Comets the lead for good.

Waupaca scored its final six points from the free-throw line.

Mya Johannes led the Comets with 10 points and Smidt finished with seven. Kitzinger led all scorers with 16.

The Comets hosted Mosinee Dec. 5 and will return to North Eastern play at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, in Appleton against Fox Valley Lutheran.
