T-Birds snap losing streak

Kisting, Falk lead with 15 points

By Greg Seubert

It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough to put an end to a four-game losing streak.

The Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team outscored Weyauwega-Fremont 33-15 in the second half and went on to hand the Indians a 48-23 loss Dec. 15 in Weyauwega-Fremont.

It was the first Central Wisconsin Conference East Division win in four tries for the Thunderbirds, who improved to 3-4 overall. W-F fell to 0-7 and 0-3 in division play.

Neither team shot well from the field in the first half, but Katie Cherek’s three-pointer in the final seconds gave the T-Birds a 15-8 lead at the break.

The Indians cut the lead to 17-11 early in the second half on the first of Taylor Folk’s threes, but three consecutive baskets pushed the lead back to 13 points and the Indians never got any closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Folk’s final three made it 28-19, but I-S answered with an 11-2 run that included seven points from Cherek.

Folk and Iola-Scandinavia’s Bryanna Kisting led their teams with 15 points. Cherek also finished in double figures with 10 points, while teammates Emilie Briquelet and Payton Wester added eight and seven, respectively.
