‘Always a Bridesmaid’

Play features fraught weddings, goofy friendships

By Scott Bellile

The Wolf River Theatrical Troupe’s spring comedy “Always a Bridesmaid” promises to offer plenty of laughs, but actresses caution attendees not to expect valid wedding-planning advice.

Jessie Jones’, Nicholas Hope’s and Jamie Wooten’s play revolves around four friends – Libby Ruth, Deedra, Monette and Charlie – who promised the night of their high school senior prom that they would be bridesmaids in one another’s weddings.

Thirty years later, the weddings are still happening, but not without setbacks such as fist fights on the altar, runaway brides and the unfortunate release of doves on opening day of hunting season.

Cast member Dorea Lauer said of the characters’ weddings, “I think all of them are things to think about in [terms of] what not to do, like ‘please avoid x, y, z.’”

The show runs Thursday through Saturday, April 5-7, and again the next week, April 12-14.

The play stars Mickey Schmidt, Dorea Lauer, Steph Friebohle, Jeanine Supanich, Dorie Attoe and Patty Grossman. It is directed by Sandy Renner.

Audiences will meet four women who have contrasting personalities and relationship situations, Grossman said. One is locked in a stable marriage, the second drags her feet about having a relationship at all, the third finds herself investigating the frailties of marriage, and the fourth is hoping the third marriage is the charm.

“It’s just a funny look at how marriage is so different for everybody,” Grossman said.

The subject matter might sound deep at times, but the story remains light-hearted and the ensemble cast’s true friendships stay in the spotlight, Schmidt said.

All shows take place at the Real Opportunity Outreach Center, 304 St. John’s Place, New London. Admission is $15 per person. Call 920-982-6060 to reserve tickets.
