Big inning lifts SPASH over Comets

Waupaca plays in Mauston

By Greg Seubert

Score early and score often.

It was a game plan that worked for the Stevens Point Area Senior High baseball team.

The Panthers scored eight runs in the top of the first inning and went on to hand Waupaca a 12-2 five-inning loss April 23 at the Woodside Sports Complex near Mauston.

It was the first game of the season for SPASH, while the Comets fell to 3-1 after playing their first game in nearly two weeks.

Six hits, two errors and two walks added up to an 8-0 lead for the Panthers after a half inning.
Brandon Krcmar started on the mound for the Comets, but fell to 2-1 on the season after giving up seven hits in two innings.

Brenden Canterbury cut into SPASH’s lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third after Brandon Wanty reached on a fielder’s choice.

Adam Kennedy relieved Krcmar and retired the Panthers in order in the third and fourth innings, but SPASH added four more runs in the fifth and held the Comets scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.

Cole Wright had three of the Panthers’ 12 hits and drove in three runs, while Isaac Perner, Michael Glodosky and Jacob Danielsen added two hits each.

Waupaca returned to North Eastern Conference play April 24 at Denmark and is scheduled to host the Vikings at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26. The Comets are also scheduled to play at Clintonville at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, and host New London and Stoughton starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 28.
