Arbor View Gardens ready for summer

Opening to public May 18

Arbor View Gardens will open to the public Friday, May 18.

The gardens will be open Wednesday through Sunday every week throughout the summer months and continue through September. Garden hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Arbor View is a public botanical garden that includes many aspects of home gardening as well as garden art and a touch of the exotic. Visitors can learn about gardening or enjoy nature’s beauty in various themed garden settings.

The gardens put down roots in 1975 when the first tree was planted. In the 43 years since, thousands of plant species have been added to create diverse plant environments, ranging from xeric gardens to ponds.

Brochures and printed handouts are available in the visitor center, based on past interest of gardeners and horticulturists. These include self-guided walking trail maps, an essay on garden use for exercise, introduced woody plant invasive species to avoid planting, Native American land history and design perspectives on the Japanese Teahouse shelter.

Last spring, Arbor View Gardens embarked on an effort to renovate garden beds with an increased emphasis on sustainability with groundcovers. The company has since brought about the largest garden makeover since its inception.

This past winter, the weather has tested the gardens like never before, coating the beds with ice and with very little snow cover.

Visitors can also check out the new additions to the Little Free Library. Represented are books on gardening, natural and environmental sciences, ecosystem health, social justice, mysteries and more.

Also make note of Arbor View Gardens’ new web site at arborviewbotanicgarden.org.

As in the past, admission to Arbor View Gardens will be through a free will donation.

The gardens are located a half-mile southeast of Embarrass on the corner of Palmer Road and County Road C. All visitors are asked to use the main entrance located on Palmer Road.
