T-Birds wrapping up season

Softball team wins three, loses three

Iola-Scandinavia’s softball team won three games and lost three this past week.

The Thunderbirds lost to Weyauwega-Fremont 13-1 at home on May 7; beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 10-0 at home May 8; dropped 4-2 and 2-1 games at home to Shiocton May 10; and picked up an 11-4 win over Auburndale and a 16-2 win over Tigerton May 12.

The team is 4-6 in Central Wisconsin Conference play and 6-7 overall.

Weyauwega-Fremont scored 10 runs in the first three innings, including in the top of the first.

The T-Birds scored their run in the third inning. Lindsey Frank led off the inning with a double and eventually scored on Mackenzie Kielblock’s fielder’s choice.

Kielblock allowed 17 hits and five walks while striking out eight batters.

I-S 10, W-B 0 (5 inn.)
I-S revenged a 4-2 loss earlier in the season by shutting out the Chargers in five innings.

Kielblock held W-B to three hits. She and Erin Charles each had three hits for the Thunderbirds. Charles drove in four runs and the game ended on her bases-loaded single in the fifth. Kielblock, Hannah Melum, Olivia Schustek and Frank each had a double. Frank drove in two runs on a double in the third inning.

Shiocton 4, I-S 2 (5 inn.)
I-S spotted Shiocton three runs in the first inning and never recovered.

Kielblock allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out two batters.

She also had three hits and scored both of the T-Birds’ runs. She singled, advanced to third base on two passed balls and scored on Melum’s single in the first. Kielblock also doubled in the fifth and scored on Schustek’s single.

Shiocton 2, I-S 1 (5 inn.)
The Chiefs completed the doubleheader sweep with Kellyn Van Straten’s single that scored Ally Durham from third base in the bottom of the fifth.

Kielblock allowed only two hits, but ended up taking the loss.

Shiocton’s Cassidy Defferding did not allow a hit. The T-Birds scored their lone run in the fifth, as Frank walked, eventually got to third base and scored on Kielblock’s groundout.

I-S 11, Auburndale 4
I-S scored 10 runs in the first three innings in a win on the Apaches’ home field.

Kielblock allowed eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters to get the win.

Melum had four hits, including two doubles and a fifth-inning home run, and finished with four RBIs. Ashlynn Schmies had two hits, while Charles and Frank each drove in two runs on their lone hits. Emily Wolfgram also drove in a run in the third inning with a double.

I-S 16, Tigerton 2 (5 inn.)
The T-Birds came up with six runs in the first and second innings in a win over the Tigers.

Freshman Lizzie Jones made her varsity pitching debut for the T-Birds and earned her first career win by going the distance. She allowed three hits, didn’t walk a batter and finished with four strikeouts.

Melum had three hits, including a run-scoring double in the second inning. Kielblock and Schmies each had two hits and Schmies and Lyncoln Podgorny each drove in two runs. Quinn Hoyord drove in three runs, while Jones drove in three of her four RBIs with a double in the second inning.

The T-Birds will open WIAA state tournament play Tuesday, May 22. First-round opponents will be listed at www.waupacanow.com when available.
