Summer Nights Concerts

The Waupaca Community Arts Board will begin its series of Summer Nights Concerts on Wednesday, June 13, with Copper Box.

The free concert will take place at the Upper South Park Pavilion, overlooking Shadow Lake.

The arts board will host a family arts project at 6 p.m., and the band will start playing at 7 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and are asked to bring donations for the Waupaca Area Food Pantry.

This first Summer Nights Concert will feature food from the Fox River Valley Food Truck “Le Prince French Crepes.”

Beer and beverages will also be available for purchase.

The Wisconsin Blues Society describes Copper Box as a “hot Zydeco Swamp/Blues Rock outfit with a great baritone and tenor sax gal and a hot accordion man.”

Copper Box has received multiple music awards, including the Wisconsin Area Music Industry’s Americana Artist of the year in 2009 and 2012.

The band plays throughout the state and was featured in Waupaca a few years ago for Arts on the Square’s Friday Night Street Dance.

The arts board received multiple requests to bring Copper Box back to Waupaca.

The 6 p.m. family arts project that precedes the concert will be about creating custom pennants.

The fabric flags will be decorated with markers and acrylic stamps and be used to adorn “Wautopia,” this year’s community art project.

The Wautopia structure will be erected on Session Street on Saturday, Aug. 11 and remain in place until Sunday, Aug. 19.

“This will be a fun way for even more people to participate in the creation of Wautopia,” said artist Patricia Vaux, who is coordinating the family art projects.

This year’s other Summer Nights Concerts will include Mojoe and Flipside on Wednesday, July 18; The Jimmys on Wednesday, Aug. 1; and Pupy Costello and the New Hiram Kings on Wednesday, Aug. 15.

“As in previous years, these Summer Nights Concerts would not be possible without the support of some local individuals and businesses with their generous donations,” said Steve Laedtke, the arts board’s music and talent coordinator.
