A dog was rescued but a house and unattached garage were destroyed in a town of Lebanon fire Monday, June 26.

New London Fire Department was dispatched to N5605 Collier Road shortly after 10:30 a.m. for a report from a passerby that a garage was burning 6 to 8 feet away from a home. A minute later, the caller said the fire had spread to the house.

Firefighters arrived to find the garage and north side of the house were engulfed.

The occupants, Cheryl Prahl and her adult son, were not home, but an 8-year-old dog was found hiding under a bed.

Firefighter Nick Wickman and Lt. Jake Dishno removed the dog from the home. They turned it over to firefighters Jarid McKeever and Joe Kicherer, who placed a breathing mask onto the dog and administered oxygen for several minutes because it had inhaled smoke.

The dog appeared to be OK and was reunited with its owners, New London Fire Capt. Don Conat stated in a news release.

Nobody was injured in the fire. The cause remains under investigation. Conat did not know the dollar value of the damage.

Fire crews remained on scene for two-and-a-half hours.

New London Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from Manawa, Bear Creek, Weyauwega and as well as New London First Responders, Gold Cross Ambulance, the Waupaca Sheriff’s Office and the Red Cross. Hortonville-Hortonia Fire District staffed the fire station while New London was out.
