T-Birds take down the Phoenix

By Holly Neumann

The Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds earned the first win of the season, beating the Montello/Princeton/Green Lake Phoenix 32-0 at home on Friday, Aug. 17.

The T-Birds were able to get on the board on their second possession of the game, when Connor Kurki ran the ball in from 59 yards out for a touchdown. With the point after touchdown (PTA) failing, Iola-Scandinavia had a 6-0 lead.

Late in the first quarter Bryce Huettner added to the scoring on a 2 yard run putting the T-Birds up 12-0.

Kurki found the end-zone again in the second quarter, on a 6 yard run, to widen the gap to 18-0 at the half.

Just as the Phoenix were getting close to the striking zone in the third quarter, Ed Bonikowske came up with two big plays for the T-Birds to keep them out of the end zone, leaving the score at 18-0.

Kurki and Huettner both scored again in to give Iola-Scandinavia the 32-0 win.

Iola-Scandinavia had a game total of 397 yards.

Leading the way was Kurki who completed two of four passes for 22 yards and ran the ball 14 times for 170 and three touchdowns.

Huettner and Bonikowske led the tackles with 11 and 8 respectively.

The T-Birds will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 24 when they travel to Marathon to take on the Red Raiders.
