I-S netters win at home

T-Birds beat Port, Assumption

By Greg Seubert
Iola-Scandinavia’s volleyball team picked up home wins over Port Edwards and Assumption Aug. 23.

The wins at the Iola-Scandinavia Community Fitness & Aquatic Center came two days after the Thunderbirds opened the season at the Winneconne Invitational.

I-S triangular
The Thunderbirds swept Port Edwards and won two of three sets with Assumption.

I-S 3, Port Edwards 0
I-S picked up 25-23, 25-13 and 25-16 wins over the Blackhawks.

Payton Wester finished with 23 service points, including nine aces, and added 12 kills and five blocks. Bryanna Kisting had 18 assists and Mackenzie Kielblock finished with 11 kills.

“The whole team communicated and worked together really well to bring forth their best effort,” coach Teresa Kielblock said. “It was an exciting match for us all the way around.”

I-S 2, Assumption 1
The T-Birds won the first two sets 25-14 and 25-24 before the Royals avoided the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third game.

Emily Wolfgram served up 11 points and Kisting chipped in with seven assists and six points.

“We walked away with the win, but our girls need to be able to keep the talking and positivity going the whole game,” Kielblock said. “When they quieted down, they started to make mistakes and got down on themselves. We got a little sloppy, resulting in not being able to get good passes for good attacks.”

Winneconne Invitational
I-S fell to Winneconne, Denmark and Wautoma.

Winneconne 2, I-S 0
The Wolves defeated the T-Birds 25-23, 25-17.

Wester served up 14 points, including a team-high eight aces; and Lyncoln Podgorny added five points.

“I thought the girls played well in this match,” Kielblock said. “They came out right away and got a lead, but then got comfortable and let it slip away. I really think they played hard until the end and didn’t give up like they would have in the past. It’s early yet, but I see a lot of improvement in a lot of the girls coming back from last year. Even though the stats don’t show it, our hitters got a lot of really good hits, but Winneconne made great plays on those hits.”

Denmark 2, I-S 0
The Vikings picked up 25-17 and 25-15 wins.

Kielblock and Aleyna Thoe led the team with seven digs.

“The girls were quick to get a lot of digs and made some great plays against Denmark,” Kielblock said. “On the flip side, our hitters were getting some great hits, but Denmark would always somehow get their hands on the ball to make a play. There were some mistakes that were crucial to giving them points. Had we not made those mistakes, we wouldn’t have lost. It’s a learning experience. All we can do is try to figure it out and move on to the next match.”

Wautoma 2, I-S 1
Wautoma won the first game 25-20, I-S took the second set 25-20 and the Hornets wrapped up the match with a 16-14 win.

Team leaders included Wolfgram with nine points; Kisting with nine assists; and Kielblock with eight digs and five blocks.

“The girls played like we never saw them play before,” Kielblock said. “Our back row was doing a great job getting the passes to Kisting so she could set up our hitters, who were taking swings left and right. The girls kept their intensity up and fought hard all three sets to try and bring home a W. They came up short, but if they play all season like they played tonight, I think we’ll be in for some exciting volleyball to watch this season.”

The T-Birds are now off until they compete in the Auburndale Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8.
