Lions run over Indians

W-F drops home opener

By Greg Seubert

At least the Weyauwega-Fremont football team doesn’t have to deal with Carter Stebane anymore.

The senior running back scored all four of Brillion’s touchdowns and ran for 224 yards Aug. 24 in the Lions’ 26-6 nonconference win over the Indians.

Stebane wasn’t the only Brillion player who had success running the ball, as the Lions outgained the Indians 422-121 on the ground.

The Indians struck first with 17 seconds remaining in the first quarter on freshman Muluken Rucks’ 49-yard touchdown run.

The score remained 6-0 until Stebane tied the game with a 1-yard run on the final play of the first half. The Lions had a chance to take the lead before the break, but the Indians blocked Stebane’s extra-point attempt.

Stebane then broke the 6-6 tie with a 5-yard run with 2:36 remaining in the third quarter. He added an 8-yard run 2:30 into the fourth quarter and a 35-yard run with 6:58 remaining.

Rucks finished with 63 yards on four carries, while teammate Max Mayerhofer added 55 yards on 14 carries. Tyler Schmidt added 91 rushing yards for Brillion.

Neither team had much success throwing the football. Weyauwega-Fremont’s Kolden Baehman completed five of 10 attempts for 61 yards, while Brillion’s Avery Wenzel completed one of his two passes for 15 yards. Tyler Wetzel caught four of Baehman’s passes for a game-high 60 yards.

Rucks and Wetzel led the Indians with 10 tackles each, while Logan Bartel and Levi Erdmann added eight and seven, respectively.

The Indians fell to 0-2 on the season and will open Central Wisconsin Large Conference play at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at Iola-Scandinavia.
