New London gets win

Comets blanked at home

By Greg Seubert

Missed opportunities.

Those two words sum up the Waupaca football team’s 14-0 Bay Conference loss to New London Aug. 31 at Comet Field.

While the Comets’ defense held Makaio Harn, New London’s leading rusher, to under 100 yards, the senior found the end zone twice.

A blocked punt set the Bulldogs up at the Waupaca 5-yard line and Harn scored on the next play with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter.

The score remained 7-0 until Harn’s 4-yard run capped a seven-play, 56-yard drive with 1:54 to go in the game.

Waupaca had chances to score. A high snap on a New London punt in the first half sailed over the punter’s head, but he was able to find the ball and get the kick away.

A Waupaca drive in the second half ended with an incomplete pass in the end zone on fourth down.

The Comets lost two players to injuries in the third quarter. Colby Bernhardt and Damian Martinez were hurt on the same drive and didn’t return to the game. Waupaca was also missing a number of players due to earlier injuries.

The Comets ran the ball 40 times for 100 yards and Davis Levine completed eight of 18 passes for 80 yards. Harn finished with 95 yards on 22 carries and Myles Parker completed 12 of 20 passes for 96 yards for New London.

The Comets will travel to Green Bay West at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, while the Bulldogs will host Green Bay East.
