Iola-Scandinavia picked up a Central Wisconsin Conference volleyball win Sept. 6 by taking three of three sets for Wild Rose.

The Thunderbirds also won two of three matches Aug. 30 at a four-team meet in Almond.

The T-Birds swept the Wildcats 25-23, 25-13, 25-17.

Team leaders included Bryanna Kisting (13 assists, 12 points); Mackenzie Kielblock (six kills); Payton Wester (four aces); and Emilie Briquelet (three blocks).

“Tonight is a win in the book,” coach Teresa Kielblock said. “Our passing slacked a little, which caused our setting and hitting to be off tonight. We didn’t get the amount of attacks that we usually get, but were able to play scrappy to get pick up some digs to keep the ball going. Maddie Kent did a great job in the back row covering tonight. We have some things to work on, but overall, tonight was OK.”

I-S opened the meet by falling to Manawa 23-25, 25-23, 17-25.

Kielblock led the T-Birds with 13 points, while Kisting scored 12 points and Emily Wolfgram chipped in with three aces.

“Manawa was by far the most exciting game of the night to watch,” Kielblock said. “The girls had high energy and stayed positive. We had hard hits that threw the defence out of system and serves were in each zone that was called. The girls worked hard to cover tips and as the game went on became more scrappy than ever.”

The T-Birds then defeated Marion 25-21, 25-7 behind eight kills from Samantha Glad and Kisting’s 13 points.

“The girls played well and Kayla Sidman did a great job when she stepped in and played middle,” Kielblock said. “We worked on reading Marion’s serves and hits. We also worked really hard on receiving tips and had a good serving game. It was a great match to see everyone step up and do their part at different times when needed.”

I-S then wrapped up the meet with 25-19 and 25-11 over Almond-Bancroft.

Kisting scored 12 points in the match.

“As a team, we served the ball very well,” Kielblock said. “The energy on the court picked up and continued to grow. The girls also had a really good passing game and serve-receive was the best it had been all night.”
