Hortonville cross country preview

Q&A with Coach Lee VanHulle

By Erik Buchinger

Team goals/expectations: To work hard on the fundamentals of running. To eventually learn and think independently. Cross country is hard work, and the athlete needs to be dedicated and rise above the challenges.

Team’s strengths: The athletes have a fascination for learning and wanting more information to improve.

Team’s weaknesses: The weather. Running in Wisconsin can lead to many terrains and conditions. A person never knows how many layers to pack or leave at home.

Biggest event on the schedule: Great Meadows Invite in Virginia. This is a tough meet with some of the top high school runners in the nation. The course is grueling. It is a true test for any cross country runner.

What would make for a successful season: For the athlete to discover heart, will and the mind of a champion yet still remain humble. For each runner to dig down and give 100 percent when the team needs it the most.

Why fans should be excited for this year’s team: We are a young, dedicated team with a big heart.
