Suspect charged with burglary

Police say a New London man stole $21,200 worth of digital devices.

Brandon S. Luter, 31, is charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession of a controlled substance.

On Aug. 17, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy Graham Barden met with a man who reported a break-in at his storage unit in New London.

The victim later provided an inventory of the stolen items. He listed 20 Samsung Galaxy S5 cellphones, six Bluetooth speakers, 12 Unite Netgear Mobile WiFi units, five DVD players and numerous other electronic devices.
The total value of the stolen property exceeded $21,000.

The owner of the stolen items reported that some of the phones had been activated in California and Florida.

Detective Sgt. Tim Myers found one of the phones had been pawned at an Appleton store on Aug. 23.

According to the criminal complaint, Luter’s name and driver’s license number were on the exchange ticket.

When deputies conducted a search warrant of Luter’s home, they seized numerous items that matched the descriptions of stolen property.

They also reported finding drug paraphernalia and a bottle of tramadol hydrochloride, a narcotic painkiller, with another person’s name on the prescription label.

A Fremont woman had reported the theft of the medication on Aug. 29.

One witness told Barden that Luter tried to sell him a Samsung Galaxy phone. Another witness said Luter said he got the phones by “popping lockers,” according to the criminal complaint.

Luter faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted of burglary.

He was released from custody after posting a $2,000 cash bond.
