Weyauwega recognizes Potratz

City worker receives Real Heroes Award

Trevor Potratz has received a Real Heroes Award from the city of Weyauwega.

Mayor Jack Spierings presented the award to him on Sept. 17, during the common council’s regular monthly meeting.

The recognition is for actions Potratz took last summer while working for the city’s Public Works Department.

Around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, Potratz was working on Main Street  when he saw a vehicle traveling northbound on Emerald Street. The driver appeared to be incapacitated.

Potratz yelled but was unable to get the driver’s attention.

He ran to the car, which was still in motion, and tried to open the driver’s side door.

After that attempt failed, the 23-year-old jumped over the hood of the moving car and entered the vehicle through the passenger side door.

Once inside the car, Potratz was able to stop it just as it entered Main Street.

He then assisted law enforcement by pulling the driver out of the vehicle.

The driver did not have a pulse, so CPR was started.

After several minutes, the driver regained a strong pulse, and was transported to a local hospital.

If Potratz had not stopped the vehicle, it would have crossed over Main Street, where there was heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

The car also could have proceeded through the front of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Potratz is a summer employee for the city.

He attends the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
