Thunderbirds advance in playoffs

The Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds defeated the Three Lakes/Phelps Blue Jays 54-14 in a Division 6, level 1 playoff game at home Friday, Oct. 19.
The T-Birds took a commanding 40-0 lead in the first half of the game.
Connor Kurki threw two touchdown passes and ran the ball in three times, while Bryce Huettner added another TD to give I-S the lead.
The only score in the third quarter came on an 8-yard run from Huettner. Kyle Heise ran in the 2-point conversion, widening the gap to 48-0.
The Blue Jays were able to get on the board in the final quarter of the game. First on a short 3-yard run and then after successful onside kick, they ran the ball in again bringing the score to 48-14.
With 12.9 seconds left on the clock, Iola-Scandinavia’s Marcus Jaworski ran the ball in on a quarterback keeper for the final score of the game, giving the T-Birds a 54-14 victory.
Iola-Scandinavia had a total of 440 yards, 113 in the air and 327 on the ground compared to Three Lakes/Phelps who only had 177 rushing.
Kurki completed 5/5 passes for 113 yards while Huettner led the rushing with 13 carries for 115 yard.
The T-Birds, who remain undefeated, with take on Coleman, who is 6-4, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26.
