Comets blanked in semifinal

Mosinee moves on with 2-0 win

By Greg Seubert

A trip to state was not on the cards this season for the Waupaca boys’ soccer team.

The Comets’ season came to an end Oct. 25 with a 2-0 loss to Mosinee in a WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal in Mosinee.

Both of the game’s goals came in a two-minute span midway through the second half.

A corner kick led to Mosinee’s first goal, as Tim Goeppel scored off of an assist from Cole Vandehey in the 67-minute mark.

Mosinee added to its lead less than two minutes later, as Vandehey sent a shot past Waupaca goalkeeper Bailey Colden. Toren Holtz ended up with an assist on the play.

The Comets had an opportunity to cut the lead in half with 12:50 remaining in the game after Mosinee goalkeeper Adam Moucha received a yellow card for colliding with a Waupaca player. Ryan Walsh replaced Moucha in the net and stopped Jack Snider’s penalty kick.

Another Waupaca shot later in the game bounced off of the goal pipe.

Mosinee will face Baldwin-Woodville at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in Rhinelander in a sectional final. Baldwin-Woodville eliminated Rice Lake 3-1 in the other semifinal match.
