By Greg Seubert

Waupaca County deer hunters harvested nearly 4,000 deer during the first two days of Wisconsin’s nine-day gun deer season.

According to preliminary numbers from the state Department of Natural Resources, hunters registered 3,952 deer – 1,987 antlered and 1,965 antlerless – during opening weekend.

The season opened Nov. 17 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 25.

Only Marathon County reported a higher harvest with 4,140 deer.

Totals from other area counties include Portage, 2,423 (1,326 antlered, 1,097 antlerless); Waushara, 2,239 (1,179 antlered, 1,060 antlerless); Outagamie, 1,164 (644 antlered, 520 antlerless); Winnebago, 617 (354 antlered, 263 antlerless); and Shawano, 3,800 (2,006 antlered, 1,794 antlerless).

All seven counties are in the DNR’s Central Farmland Management Unit. Unit hunters harvested 64,076 deer, included 32,850 antlered and 21,226 antlerless.

The unit also included Adams, Barron, Brown, Buffalo, Calumet, Chippewa, Clark, Door, Dunn, Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Jackson, Juneau, Kewaunee, La Crosse, Manitowoc, Marinette, Marquette, Monroe, Oconto, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, St. Croix, Sheboygan, Trempealeau and Wood counties, as well as Fort McCoy.

Statewide, hunters harvested 118,670 deer, including 65,388 antlered and 52,282 antlerless.

That’s up from last year’s opening weekend total of 105,216.

The DNR’s Bureau of Law Enforcement reported two hunting incidents, both of which occurred Nov. 18 and resulted in injuries.

The accidents occurred in Columbia and Dunn counties.
