Waupaca falls to Freedom, Mosinee

The Waupaca boys’ basketball team dropped recent home games to Freedom and Mosinee.

Freedom handed the Comets a 60-49 North Eastern Conference loss Dec. 6 and Mosinee returned home with a 79-49 nonconference win Dec. 4.

Freedom 60, Waupaca 49
Freedom made 14 of 19 free throws – including nine in a row at one point – and held off the Comets’ late rally.

The lead changed hands for times in the first half the Irish closed the half with a 9-4 run to take a 25-17 lead at the break.

Freedom had a 12-point lead four times in the second half before the Comets cut the lead to 52-47 on Justin Vaughn’s three-pointer.

The Comets never got any closer, as Freedom’s final 12 points came from the free-throw line.

Hunter Marcom and Shaun Anderson led the Comets with 18 and 17 points, respectively, while Luke Pingel had 17 for the Irish and Austin Balck chipped in with 13.

Mosinee 79, Waupaca 49
The Indians outscored the Comets by 19 points in the first half and 11 points in the second.

Mosinee led 45-26 at halftime and outscored the Comets 34-23 over the next 18 minutes.

Marcom led Waupaca with 18 points, while Mosinee’s Luke Spink led all scorers with 27 points.

Waupaca will begin a two-game road stretch Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Clintonville and will head to Oconto Falls for a North Eastern matchup with the Panthers. Tipoff for both games is set for 7 p.m.
